Here is another project I made a while ago. It is a led binary clock. It uses to arduino to keep time which is not very accurate. Now I'm thinking of using the ds1307 breakout board from adafruit to keep true time.
You could go to Maxim's website and order a few DS1307 ICs as samples. This would take care of your need for a clock with a minimum investment. That's what I did.
